On the basis of Section 96 of the Federal Expellees Act and the concept further developed by the Federal Government in 2016, the Department of Culture also promotes cultural mediation projects that serve to maintain and pass on historical and regional knowledge through cultural encounters and events at home and abroad.

Eligibility requirements

More detailed information on funding requirements, formats and procedures are provided in the “Explanations for applying for project funding for the preservation, research and communication of German culture and history in Eastern Europe”. Funding must be applied for using a formalized form and attachments that supplement it. The application must be addressed to the cultural department and submitted to it at least three months before the intended start of the project. Deviating from the explanations, the project must be completed within the current budget year if it is funded by the cultural department. The funding decision is made by the cultural advisor, including, if necessary, expert reports from the Federal Institute for Culture and History of Germans in Eastern Europe (BKGE) or the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media. Funding is guaranteed through a contract to which the relevant provisions of grant law apply. The project sponsor must indicate the funding in a suitable manner (logos can be made available). Proof of the appropriate and successful use of the funds must be provided to the cultural department.
