Women – Traditional Costume – Life Stories
Ed. Henrike Hampe, Danube Swabian Central Museum
2024 / Price € 19.80
Clothes are part of our personality. They show who we are, who we want to be – or should be. Before garments were mass-produced and marketed globally, every article of clothing was a unique item created for a specific person, and the Danube-Swabian outfits in this catalogue date from that time. They show the close relationship of women to their apparel – from work clothes to bridal trousseaus, from traditional costume for girls to funeral dress – and every ensemble recounts a female life story between 1880 and 1990.. Woven into the fabric are experiences of pride and deference, loss and death, hope and new beginnings. The items of clothing reflect the everyday lives of their wearers as well as their rural and multicultural society. But they also show the traces of extreme experiences such as war and forced migration. The book also contains pictures of traditional costumes by the Austrian artist Erna Piffl (1904 – 1987) and places them in the National Socialist context.

Danube views
Ungarische Kunst aus Szentendre
Christian Glass, Andrea Vándor
2016 / Price €12.90
The exhibition of the same name at the DZM has resulted in an illustrated book. This is the first German-language overview of the “Montmartre of the Danube” (Claudio Magris). As the nucleus of modern Hungarian art and still a lively artist colony, the small town of Szentendre combines 90 years of artistic creativity in the heart of Europe. From the wide range of works created there, the volume selects those that deal with the city and the nearby Danube.
During the exhibition in Ulm, three contemporary artists (Lajos Csontó, Kamilla Szíj, Ottó Vincze) entered into a dialogue about these pictures. As the volume documents, their artistic interventions created a shimmering tension between today and yesterday and opened up new perspectives for visitors.
This interplay is supplemented by the works entitled “Donauwelten” by students from Ulm, which were created during the exhibition. Their fresh and creative approaches effortlessly bridge the gap between Ulm and Szentendre, 1000 kilometers away by river

Migration im Donauraum
Die Ansiedlung der Deutschen im 18. Jahrhundert
Ed. Christian Glass
2012 / Price €16.80
Baden-Württemberg is now considered an immigration country. But 300 years ago people emigrated from the south-west of Germany because they saw no future here. In 1712 the first families on Ulmer Schachteln dared to travel down the Danube to Hungary to start a new life there. They also had the culture of their regions of origin with them. Through the centuries-long exchange between the emigrants, who were called “Swabians” in Hungary (regardless of where they came from), and the peoples of south-eastern Europe, a new culture emerged – that of the Danube Swabians. Recent research corrects common perceptions of emigration that are heavily influenced by stereotypes, wishful thinking and prejudice. Using objects, images and documents from ten museums in four countries, the volume conveys a complex picture of the emigration process.

Dieter Mammel
Lifeline
Ed. Danube Swabian Central Museum
2024 / Price € 48.00
In 2015, Dieter Mammel witnessed the arrival of Syrian refugees on the island of Kos.
In the years that followed, the Berlin painter dealt with his own family’s story of flight, the uprooting associated with it and the new beginning in another country.
The exhibition tour LIFELINE, which traces the family’s journey through life, and the accompanying catalog show the pictures created as part of this exploration and question the themes of origin, flight and memory as timeless constants of human experience.
Mammel paints with ink on unprimed, wet canvas.
The focus is always on just one color, on light and shadow.
It almost seems as if the motifs are melting away – and with them time and memory.
Mammel tries to capture them with his brush.
His paintings bear witness to the difficulty of this endeavor, but also to the necessity and beauty of the attempt itself.

2016 / price €19.80
Dragoljub Zamurović, born in Niš (Serbia) in 1947, lives as a freelance photographer in Belgrade. Since 1988 he has published for many years in cooperation with the French picture agency Gamma under the pseudonym Art Zamur for international magazines such as Time, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, Stern, Paris-Match, Figaro Magazine, Geo, Europeo, National Geographic. To date, Zamurović has published 14 photo books about landscapes, cities and countries in Southeastern Europe and about the Roma people.
The illustrated book accompanying the exhibition contains sixty photographic portraits of Danube Swabians as well as descriptions of their living conditions. Hans Fernbach, Otto Heinek, Renata Trischler and Ralph Menz introduce the current situation of the German minority in Romania, Hungary, Croatia and Serbia. On his travels, Dragoljub Zamurović met very different people, whose stories he wrote down. The result was a unique visual documentation that unites sixty Danube Swabian biographies between Budapest and Belgrade. Zamurović’s impressive photographs and the interviews that the Danube Swabian Central Museum conducted with the portrayed Danube Swabians give insights into their everyday lives “among others”.

Klein Wien an der Bega
Ed. Martin Rill, Dan Leopold Ciobotaru
2010 / Price € 6.00
Located on the Bega River, the city of Timişoara has a history of more than a thousand years and has been the capital of the Banat since the early Middle Ages. In the late Middle Ages, the settlement developed into a city, becoming a fortress and temporary residence of the Hungarian king in 1212. Between 1552 and 1716 it fell under Ottoman rule. After its liberation by the Habsburg troops under Prince Eugene of Savoy, the city was re-established. Timişoara and the Banat have been part of Romania since 1918. Timişoara has developed into a multicultural city in the course of history and has also been referred to as “Little Vienna on the Bega”. In 1989 the signal for the overthrow of the communist dictatorship came from Timişoara. From here the resistance spread across the whole country.

The city has had an eventful history, changing its nationality several times and experiencing wars, most recently in 1999. Due to the coexistence of many different ethnic groups, including Danube Swabians, the city developed its own unique character.
The author of the town history is Ágnes Ózer, a historian living in Neusatz. She served as curator at the City Museum from 1979 to 2011 and from 2017 until her retirement, where she curated several exhibitions on the city’s history.

Kinderwelten entlang der Donau
Vom Aufwachsen als Deutsche in einer multiethnischen Region
Ed. Henrike Hampe
2015 / Price € 14.80
How do children and young people live in a multicultural society? Answers to this can be found in a part of Europe in which the coexistence and coexistence of different languages, denominations and lifestyles has been normal for centuries. On the middle reaches of the Danube, Germans have also lived for generations in a functioning cosmos of cultural diversity. The so-called Danube Swabians grew up in this world from an early age. For the first time, the book offers an overview of the life of Danube-Swabian children and young people in the first half of the 20th century. Descriptions by eyewitnesses are combined with a wealth of historical photographs and everyday objects to create a multifaceted picture that seems distant and close to us at the same time.

Home in a suitcase
Flüchtlinge und Vertriebene aus Südosteuropa im Nachkriegsdeutschland
Ed. Henrike Hampe
2008 / Price € 5.00
The book recalls the beginnings of the integration of more than 12 million refugees from the east in post-war Germany, which in hindsight seems so successful. They included around 200,000 Danube Swabians. Received with suspicion by many locals, rejected as “beggars” and “gypsies” and torn from their familiar living environment, they were only able to gain a foothold here by largely adapting. Based on concrete case histories, the book tells sensitively and informatively about the experiences of the refugees between their old and new homeland. Background information is provided by articles written by experts about refugees and expellees in Baden-Württemberg, as well as about the luggage the expellees brought with them.
