Migration in the Danube Region

In 1712 the first emigrants dared to venture south-east on the Ulmer Schachteln. Based on testimonies of the first settlers, the exhibition asked questions about emigration and looked at 300 years of migration history.

With this exhibition, the DZM celebrated two major anniversaries: 300 years ago, the first families emigrated to Hungary via the Danube, and Baden-Württemberg celebrated its 60th birthday. We examined Baden-Württemberg as an emigration and immigration country. In 1712 the first emigrants dared to venture south-east on the Ulmer Schachteln.

The exhibition showed objects and graphics from the 18th century from a total of ten south-eastern European museums. Based on these testimonies of the first settlers, we asked questions about emigration, because recent research has shown that statements that have been established over decades – such as the myth of the “three great Swabian migrations” – are not correct. With today’s eyes we looked at 300 years of migration history.
