Over 80 paintings and sculptures from the collection of the Modern Gallery Zagreb were on display. This was the first time in Germany that comprehensive insight into the work of Croatian artists from the last third of the 19th to the first third of the 20th century made possible. The works reflect the entire spectrum of modern European art: the end of the In the 19th century, young Croatian artists turned away from the rigid traditions of academic painting and opened up to the most varied of styles that they had got to know on their study trips and trips through Europe to Munich, Vienna, Prague, Paris and Italy.

The exhibition was a cooperation project between the Modern Gallery in Zagreb and the Danube Swabian Central Museum in Ulm. The cooperation was funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and Art of Baden-Württemberg and the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Croatia.
