Danube Swabian memories of forced labor in the Soviet Union
17.01.25 - 21.04.25
From 1945 to 1949, around 90,000 Danube Swabians were drafted into the labor service. As part of German reparations, they were to contribute to the reconstruction of the Soviet Union after the Second World War. To this end, they were deported from their homes in Hungary, Romania and Yugoslavia in the winter of 1944/45. They lived and worked in camps in the Donets Basin and the Urals under the most adverse conditions.
What did the deportees experience during this time? How do those left behind fare? What comes afterwards?
2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the events surrounding the deportation of the Danube Swabians. The exhibition approaches the topic through selected life stories.
Exhibition opening on Thursday, January 16, at 7 p.m.
