They show who we are, who we want to be – or should be. Before garments were mass-produced and marketed globally, every article of clothing was a unique item created for a specific person, and the Danube-Swabian outfits in this catalogue date from that time. They show the close relationship of women to their apparel – from work clothes to bridal trousseaus, from traditional costume for girls to funeral dress – and every ensemble recounts a female life story between 1880 and 1990.. Woven into the fabric are experiences of pride and deference, loss and death, hope and new beginnings. The items of clothing reflect the everyday lives of their wearers as well as their rural and multicultural society. But they also show the traces of extreme experiences such as war and forced migration. The book also contains pictures of traditional costumes by the Austrian artist Erna Piffl (1904 – 1987) and places them in the National Socialist context.

Details of the book

Ed. This is the first German-language overview of the “Montmartre of the Danube” (Claudio Magris). As the nucleus of modern Hungarian art and still a lively artist colony, the small town of Szentendre combines 90 years of artistic creativity in the heart of Europe. From the wide range of works created there, the volume selects those that deal with the city and the nearby Danube.

During the exhibition in Ulm, three contemporary artists (Lajos Csontó, Kamilla Szíj, Ottó Vincze) entered into a dialogue about these pictures. As the volume documents, their artistic interventions created a shimmering tension between today and yesterday and opened up new perspectives for visitors.

This interplay is supplemented by the works entitled “Donauwelten” by students from Ulm, which were created during the exhibition. Artists from the Danube countries were asked to visualize their view of the river and the people with the medium of painting. Nine curators selected 18 artists who present the art and culture of their home country and contribute to the dialogue about identity and community in a growing Europe. The result is an exhibition that shows the view of young cultural workers on the river and its people.

Details of the book

Ed. In the late Middle Ages, the settlement developed into a city, becoming a fortress and temporary residence of the Hungarian king in 1212. Between 1552 and 1716 it fell under Ottoman rule. After its liberation by the Habsburg troops under Prince Eugene of Savoy, the city was re-established. Timişoara and the Banat have been part of Romania since 1918. Timişoara has developed into a multicultural city in the course of history and has also been referred to as “Little Vienna on the Bega”. In 1989 the signal for the overthrow of the communist dictatorship came from Timişoara. Answers to this can be found in a part of Europe in which the coexistence and coexistence of different languages, denominations and lifestyles has been normal for centuries. On the middle reaches of the Danube, Germans have also lived for generations in a functioning cosmos of cultural diversity. The so-called Danube Swabians grew up in this world from an early age. For the first time, the book offers an overview of the life of Danube-Swabian children and young people in the first half of the 20th century. Descriptions by eyewitnesses are combined with a wealth of historical photographs and everyday objects to create a multifaceted picture that seems distant and close to us at the same time.

Details of the book

Ed. They included around 200,000 Danube Swabians. Received with suspicion by many locals, rejected as “beggars” and “gypsies” and torn from their familiar living environment, they were only able to gain a foothold here by largely adapting. Based on concrete case histories, the book tells sensitively and informatively about the experiences of the refugees between their old and new homeland. Background information is provided by articles written by experts about refugees and expellees in Baden-Württemberg, as well as about the luggage the expellees brought with them.

Details of the book

Ed.
