Perched on a rock above the Danube, Peterwardein Fortress is the landmark of Neusatz. Three bridges connect the districts to the right and left of the river. The city has had an eventful history, changing its nationality several times and experiencing wars, most recently in 1999. Due to the coexistence of many different ethnic groups, including Danube Swabians, the city developed its own unique character.
The author of the town history is Ágnes Ózer, a historian living in Neusatz. She served as curator at the City Museum from 1979 to 2011 and from 2017 until her retirement, where she curated several exhibitions on the city’s history.
From 2012 to 2017 she was the director of the Museum of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina in Neusatz.
The Little History of the City also contains a literary essay by László Végel about the period between the Second World War and the present in Novi Sad. Végel belongs to the Hungarian minority. He is an important literary voice in Serbia and promotes cultural diversity in his hometown

The exhibition of the same name at the DZM has resulted in an illustrated book. This is the first German-language overview of the “Montmartre of the Danube” (Claudio Magris). As the nucleus of modern Hungarian art and still a lively artist colony, the small town of Szentendre combines 90 years of artistic creativity in the heart of Europe. From the wide range of works created there, the volume selects those that deal with the city and the nearby Danube.
During the exhibition in Ulm, three contemporary artists (Lajos Csontó, Kamilla Szíj, Ottó Vincze) entered into a dialogue about these pictures. As the volume documents, their artistic interventions created a shimmering tension between today and yesterday and opened up new perspectives for visitors.
This interplay is supplemented by the works entitled “Donauwelten” by students from Ulm, which were created during the exhibition. Their fresh and creative approaches effortlessly bridge the gap between Ulm and Szentendre, 1000 kilometers away by river

Baden-Württemberg is now considered an immigration country. But 300 years ago people emigrated from the south-west of Germany because they saw no future here. In 1712 the first families on Ulmer Schachteln dared to travel down the Danube to Hungary to start a new life there. They also had the culture of their regions of origin with them. Through the centuries-long exchange between the emigrants, who were called “Swabians” in Hungary (regardless of where they came from), and the peoples of south-eastern Europe, a new culture emerged – that of the Danube Swabians. Recent research corrects common perceptions of emigration that are heavily influenced by stereotypes, wishful thinking and prejudice. Using objects, images and documents from ten museums in four countries, the volume conveys a complex picture of the emigration process.

Dragoljub Zamurović, born in Niš (Serbia) in 1947, lives as a freelance photographer in Belgrade. Since 1988 he has published for many years in cooperation with the French picture agency Gamma under the pseudonym Art Zamur for international magazines such as Time, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, Stern, Paris-Match, Figaro Magazine, Geo, Europeo, National Geographic. To date, Zamurović has published 14 photo books about landscapes, cities and countries in Southeastern Europe and about the Roma people.
The illustrated book accompanying the exhibition contains sixty photographic portraits of Danube Swabians as well as descriptions of their living conditions. Hans Fernbach, Otto Heinek, Renata Trischler and Ralph Menz introduce the current situation of the German minority in Romania, Hungary, Croatia and Serbia. On his travels, Dragoljub Zamurović met very different people, whose stories he wrote down. The result was a unique visual documentation that unites sixty Danube Swabian biographies between Budapest and Belgrade. Zamurović’s impressive photographs and the interviews that the Danube Swabian Central Museum conducted with the portrayed Danube Swabians give insights into their everyday lives “among others”.

Located on the Bega River, the city of Timişoara has a history of more than a thousand years and has been the capital of the Banat since the early Middle Ages. In the late Middle Ages, the settlement developed into a city, becoming a fortress and temporary residence of the Hungarian king in 1212. Between 1552 and 1716 it fell under Ottoman rule. After its liberation by the Habsburg troops under Prince Eugene of Savoy, the city was re-established. Timişoara and the Banat have been part of Romania since 1918. Timişoara has developed into a multicultural city in the course of history and has also been referred to as “Little Vienna on the Bega”. In 1989 the signal for the overthrow of the communist dictatorship came from Timişoara. From here the resistance spread across the whole country.

Willi Weiner and David Willen traveled down the Danube in August 2002 until they reached the Black Sea in May 2003. They processed what they saw artistically.
