The Foundation

Tasks

The Foundation is tasked with preserving and maintaining the cultural traditions and assets of the Danube Swabians (on the basis of Article 96 of the Federal Law on Refugees and Exiles) by thoroughly documenting their history, culture and environment, collecting and presenting items of cultural importance, and making research into regional studies and the folklore of Danube Swabian areas of origin accessible. It is also tasked with disseminating and deepening knowledge of our South-East European neighbours, thus contributing towards mutual understanding in Europe. It is with this aim in mind that the Foundation runs the museum in the Upper Danube bastion in Ulm.

Who is involved?

The Danube Swabian Museum is supported by the Representative for Culture and Media of the German Federal Government, following an agreement by the German parliament, the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg and the City of Ulm. Municipal, state and national representatives are all present in the foundation’s committees. The chairpersons of the Danube Swabian Homeland Associations are also members of the foundation board. These are the Homeland Associations of the Banat Swabians, the Germans of Hungary, the Satu Mare Swabians and the Homeland Association of the Danube Swabians (from the former Yugoslavia).
